Inside a Moonbounce

August 26, 2014

Bounce houses are one of the great American past times. Children have bounced on them for years for their birthday parties, school carnivals or really whenever they can find one. Jumping around like crazy is a lot of fun! Today’s blog post is going to examine just how your favorite bounce house, waterslide, obstacle course or other inflatable actually inflates to provide you and your kids hours of fun. While you can’t see how it works while jumping, believe it or not a lot is happening underneath you to make it a safe and fun experience.

Many people ask if a moonbounce rental requires power for the whole time of their party. The answer is yes. When we set up your next moonbounce or any inflatable rental a blower provides it the constant air supply it needs to remain inflated. Some inflatables do use static air, which are pumped up and sealed, but these are rarely found for basic inflatables and usually are used for specific sections of larger pieces. With standard inflatables, if the blower is not running the moonbounce will deflate. When told this many people ask how it doesn’t float away or pop because of the constant supply of air being pumped into the inflatable. Good question! All inflatables are designed to leak air from the seams to prevent it from popping under the pressure of the blower.  As inflatables age a larger blower may be added, or even a separate additional blower, to provide it with the necessary air to stay completely inflated. If an inflatable is still bouncey, it is likely that it is in good enough shape for your party.

Within the inner workings of a moon bounce are a series of tunnels. These tunnels are separated by baffles, many times made out of airbag material, that create the shapes and curves within all bounce houses, waterslides and moonbounce combos. When an inflatable breaks or is damaged, many times it will be the result of a baffle inside the bounce ripping. When this happens two separate ridges within the moonbounce will join creating one HUGE bump. To repair these types of bumps, the moonbounce repair man must cut his way into the bounce and install a new baffle to give the bounce house its original shape. When the inflatable is larger, like a waterslide or dry slide rental, you can actually enter the inside of the inflatable through crawling in a zipper. Customers SHOULD NOT do this as it can lead to the waterslide deflating with you trapped inside. We, however, must do it when repairing inflatables and work as a team to make sure all is safe.

When I step back and look at all of the different inflatable offerings sold by the manufacturers I can’t help but be impressed by the creativity. With all of the wild colors, shapes, sizes and activities in the industry, I never really know what will come out next. We at Astro Jump of Metro DC make sure to always buy the newest inventions coming out of the industry to make sure our customers always have something new and fun.
