How to Bring People to Your Party

October 4, 2017

A fundamental part of human nature is our desire to celebrate. Whether it be a birthday party or even something like shrimp & petroleum in Louisiana, human beings never stop trying to find new ways/excuses to celebrate. Isn’t it fun?!? With that said, I wanted to share a personal story about a recent birthday party my wife and I threw for our 2 year old son.

Last year my family moved to a new community in Virginia where we didn’t know a sole. Still being close to DC proper it wasn’t like we didn’t have any friends, but still, convincing people to drive an hour in DC traffic to come see you can be challenging. As a party rental company owner my work schedule is inconsistent, though substantially busier during the warm months. I knew that it would take some time to build new friendships in our new community because of my job and lack of time to socialize between work and family life. My wife has a much harder job in that she just recently became a full time mom. Even so, her job does afford her more time to meet other parents with kids and get involved in the community. Now that I’ve explained our living/social situation let’s skip ahead to the celebration story.

After having lived in our new community for a year I still knew very few local people. My wife, however, had made a few friends who also had kids and was settling into our new life well. We decided that it was time to throw our first real birthday party for our son who was turning 2. With a small list of friends we were expecting about 20 people, kids and personal family included, to attend the party. Since moonbounces and inflatable fun is my profession we were of course going to have two inflatables at the birthday party. Since I knew we would have a few older and younger kids I planned to bring a 4N1 moonbounce combo for the older kids and the Animal Kingdom Moonbounce Playground for the little ones (never let the age groups mix!). We sent out an Evite to our local friends and family with the birthday party information.

Two days before the party I asked my wife how many people were coming to the birthday party. 50 people had RSVP’d!!!! I couldn’t believe it. I asked her how that was even possible and she told me that a lot of her friends asked if they could bring a friend with their kids. We are an inclusive family and loved the idea. The party went great and sure enough, 50 or so people with children came.

In reflecting before and after about our unexpected attendance number we concluded that the inflatables must have been the main culprit in bringing everyone. What kid doesn’t want to jump on a moonbounce…for hours? Yes, my wife is charming and lovely, but we concluded that having activities for everyone’s children made our son’s birthday party a huge draw. If you are a family trying to figure out what to do on a Sunday afternoon and get an invitation to a party with moonbounces for the kids, what would you do?

This same formula with inflatables works for every type of party or gathering. If you need something to draw kids and provide hours of entertainment for them, a bounce house, obstacle course, or some other inflatable is a sure thing. As you work to plan your community events this fall consider including a moonbounce for the kids. I am sure that if you add one, like my family, you can also expect 50 people to come ready to jump!
